Jacket & vest measurements

Use a soft tape measure over a light shirt, stand naturally and ask someone to help when possible. Measure the body, not a garment that you already own.

Use the numbered diagram with the guidance below.

Neck

Place the tape around the base of your neck, where a shirt collar rests.
Keep one finger between the tape and your neck for comfort.

Shoulder width

Stand relaxed with your arms at your sides.
Measure straight across the back from one shoulder edge to the other.
Do not curve the tape around the shoulders.

Chest

Measure around the fullest part of your chest and across your shoulder blades.
Keep the tape level and your arms relaxed at your sides.
Take a normal breath; do not pull the tape tight.

Sleeve length

Start at the outer edge of your shoulder.
Run the tape down your arm to the wrist bone with your elbow slightly bent.

Back length

Find the bump at the base of your neck.
Measure straight down your back to your natural waist.

Waist

Measure around your natural waist at belly-button level.
Stand relaxed and keep the tape comfortably snug.

Height

Stand barefoot against a wall with your head level.
Measure from the floor to the top of your head.

Measuring guide

How to measure for your kilt

You'll need a soft tape measure. Wear thin clothes, stand relaxed, and measure in inches or centimetres; the dropdowns show both.

1 Waist 2 Hip or seat 3 Fell 4 Kilt length

Waist Required

Find your belly button. Your kilt sits at this level, higher than where jeans or trousers sit.
Wrap the tape around your natural waist at that height, roughly 2 in (5 cm) above your hip bone.
Pull it snug, with one thumb tucked under the tape so there is room for a tucked-in shirt. Don't pull so tight that it digs in.

Tip: don't use your trouser or jeans size. Trousers are measured lower down and usually read smaller.

Fell Optional

The fell is the straight, vertical distance from your waist measurement down to your hip measurement.
Measure it down the side of your body, from the tape at your waist to the tape at your hips.

Good to know: the fell decides where the pleats are stitched flat. It's optional, so leave it blank if you're not sure.

Hip Optional

Stand with your feet together.
Wrap the tape around the broadest part of your hips and seat, keeping it level all the way round.
Empty your pockets first. A wallet or phone adds width.

Kilt length Required

Kneel upright on the floor.
Hold the end of the tape on the floor and run it straight up to your belly button. It's easier with a helper.
Use that number as it is. Adding extra makes the kilt too long, so it hangs low and looks wrong.

Good to know: a traditionally worn kilt just brushes the floor when you kneel.
