Kilt Care, Storage and Alterations
Good care starts with the material and construction stated on your product page. Kilts, leather items, jackets, tartan fabric and accessories do not all use the same cleaning method, so keep your order details and follow any care label supplied with the item.
After wearing
- Remove the kilt pin, belt and detachable accessories before cleaning or long-term storage.
- Empty pockets and sporrans so weight does not distort them.
- Allow damp items to dry naturally in a ventilated room before storing them.
- Brush off loose surface debris gently; do not rub a stain deeper into the fabric.
Cleaning
Use the product care label as the primary instruction. Some catalogue products state that they are easy to wash or machine washable, but that does not make one method suitable for every kilt or jacket. When a label calls for professional cleaning, tell the cleaner about leather straps, buckles, pleats and decorative components.
Do not soak leather items or apply an untested cleaner. For an unfamiliar fabric or finish, test only where the care instructions permit or ask a suitable cleaning professional.
Protecting pleats
Smooth the pleats into place before hanging or laying the kilt flat. Avoid leaving a kilt crushed under other clothing. If pressing is allowed by the care label, protect the fabric and use the stated temperature; direct high heat can damage fabric and trims.
Storage
Store clean, completely dry garments in a cool, ventilated place away from prolonged direct sunlight. Use a suitable hanger that supports the garment without stretching it, or fold it carefully along the pleats. Avoid sealed storage while any moisture remains.
Keep metal accessories dry and separated where they could mark fabric. Store leather belts and straps without sharp folds.
Alterations
Contact us before altering a made-to-measure or customised item, especially if you may need to use the returns process. An alteration can affect return eligibility and may be difficult to reverse. Provide your order details, current measurements and a clear description of the fit issue.
For a new order, prevent avoidable fit problems by following the measurement guide. For return instructions, use Return an Item and review the current refund policy.
Before the next wear
Check straps, buckles, stitching and fastenings before dressing. Reattach accessories only after the garment is clean and dry. If you are assembling a new outfit, see Choosing the Right Kilt and the Prince Charlie versus Argyll guide.
